Car Free Sunday Singapore

Been quite a while since we got back, the bad news was our site actually got hacked and it took sometime to get it restored and back in action.  Still a noob in website management, I admit there are still much to catch up with the digital age.  Just as we are on the topic about digital age, the wide use of computers and digital devices has somehow caused many of us to be less sporting and more like a potato couch at home.

You will be shocked to know that more and more ski parks are actually closing due to lack of snow or maybe even lack of users as now, we have WII, computer games etc to replace the real deal.

The changes in environment and lifestyle has also caused changes to the way we survive.  Trend now is the mobile phones, tablets and computers, you can even “live” a sporting life through the games and apps on these devices.

Car Free Sunday Background

The main purpose of the car free Sunday is actually a movement by the URA to get Singaporeans go car free or car lite.  To speak the truth, Singapore is a small and efficient city as compared to many of our neighbouring countries.  Although in recent years, SMRT trains tend to have some failed occasions, overall, commuters without personal vehicles like cars or bikes are still able to get around with public buses, taxis, and for now the Grab and Uber cars.

Car free Sunday occurs every last Sunday of the month.  Participants get to enjoy 5.5km city roads being closed for running, cycling and other activities, because cars are NOT allowed to drive in from 8am to 12pm on that day.

It is a rare opportunity that one can get to go into the city with no fumes and sound of horn.  Activities like Zumba mass dancing, free performances by local dance and singing groups are just another highlight for locals and foreigners to enjoy the city without cars and bikes.

Taking Part in Car Free Sundays

My Second Car Free Sunday

This is my second time going for the event, and I realise that more and more people are joining in, not running but mostly with their personal mobile devices and bicycles.  It felt good to be running freely in the Central Business District area like a free bird which is not possible for a weekday.

The best part is there are also many free try outs on e scooters , freebies by isotonic drink companies like Pocari Sweat and also enjoying catching up with running friends on a good Sunday morning.  It is definitely a good way to spend your Sunday with your family, getting to town in MRT where it is not so crowded.
